Gutters, Fascias and Soffits
A guttering system can transform the look of your home, it may seem like a small detail but its an important detail and therefore requires some thought and consideration before deciding what gutters, soffits and fascias are best for your home.
Your choice will ultimately come down to a guttering system that suits your budget, the style of your home and the amount of rainfall in your area.
Best types of gutters
There are 2 main types of guttering
PVCU Gutters. These are relatively cheaper and are commonly used in new builds. They are weaker and more prone to weather damage like UV exposure, heavy rainfall and strong winds, so the lifespan is considerably lower. If you opt for a plastic gutter system you can save in the short term but it will need replacing fairly soon.
An alternate option if you are strapped for cash is a slightly more expensive guttersystem, GRP (Glass reinforced plastic) which is more stable and can be moulded to your specifications. This will last longer than the standard plastic option and looks as good aesthetically.
Metal Gutters. There are a few options in the metal guttering system;
Cost to replace guttering in the UK
Gutters are an essential part of any building that serve an important purpose to drain water away from the walls of the building and protect the building from water damage like damp etc. Ideally you should clear your gutters twice a year to keep them clear and functioning efficiently. Depending on which gutter system you have they will at some point need replacing, more often the plastic gutters would need replacing due to wear and tear damage.
The cost of replacing the gutter system will depend on the material you choose e.g plastic, aluminium, copper, steel, cast iron. A UPVC plastic gutter system could cost as little as £2 per meter plus the downpipe at £3 per meter, while a copper gutter would cost from £25 per meter plus a downpipe at £38 per meter. Depending on the size and complexity of the work the cost of metal options could go up steeply, however if you are looking for durability and longevity then the metal options will always come out as the preferred option.
What are fascias and soffits?
Fascias are the boards that are mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the building, it is the main board that carries the gutter. The fascia boards are fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof trusses and supports the lower edge of the bottom row of roof tiles.
Soffit board runs under the fascia boards, it is the more visible one of the two. Soffits can be ventilated to allow for the flow of air into the roof area, which would help prevent condensation and timber decay.
